Effective Processing Rate Calculator
Calculate the percentage of card sales paid in processing fees for the same statement period.
Calculate your effective rateUME provides straightforward tools that help U.S. merchants calculate processing costs and compare estimated scenarios using their own numbers.
US Merchant Economics is for U.S. business owners and operators who want to understand card-processing costs without starting with a sales conversation. Merchant statements can contain percentages, per-transaction charges, assessments, monthly fees, and other line items. Looking at one advertised rate may not show the combined cost actually paid.
An effective processing rate brings those statement totals into one comparable figure. For a single statement period, divide total processing fees by total card sales, then multiply by 100. For example, $1,650 in included processing fees divided by $50,000 in card sales produces an effective rate of 3.30%. The result depends on using totals from the same period and deciding consistently which processing-related fees to include.
UME’s calculators use the figures you enter; they do not assume a market rate or promise a particular outcome. Results are estimates intended to help you check arithmetic, compare periods, and explore a scenario before deciding whether a closer review would be useful.

Calculate your effective rateCompare estimated processing costs at your current effective rate and a hypothetical rate you choose.
Compare processing scenariosCompare user-defined flat-rate and interchange-plus scenarios using your own activity, pricing, and estimated pass-through costs.
Compare pricing structuresIf you have a merchant statement but do not know your all-in rate, begin with the Effective Processing Rate Calculator. Enter card sales and the processing fees from the same statement period to calculate the percentage you actually paid based on the fees included.
If you already know your current effective rate, use the Processing Savings Calculator to compare it with a hypothetical target rate at the same monthly card volume. A lower target shows an estimated reduction, an equal target shows no difference, and a higher target shows an estimated increase. The target is yours to choose; it is not a UME benchmark or provider quote.
For a useful comparison, keep the time period and fee treatment consistent. Statement timing, refunds, chargebacks, equipment costs, and one-time charges can affect what the figures mean. Use the result as a starting point for reviewing your own records, not as a judgment about what any merchant should pay.
After using the tools, you can request a review of your processing setup. Calculator results and scenario differences are estimates, not quotes or guarantees of savings.
